Located just a few kilometers south of Aalborg’s busy city center, Østerådalen is a masterclass in wetland restoration. What was once industrial land has been transformed into a thriving ecosystem of lakes, meadows, and reed beds that serve as the city’s green lungs.

It is a place where the urban hum fades into the background, replaced by the calls of herons and the wind through the tall grass.

The route

The park offers a variety of intersecting loops, primarily the “Yellow” and “Blue” paths. Starting from the main entrance at Over Kæret, the trails lead you across wooden footbridges that span the Østerå stream and through open grazing areas where Highland cattle are often found maintaining the landscape.

In early May, the area is vibrant. The migratory birds have returned, and the paths are lined with fresh spring growth. The terrain is almost entirely flat and well-maintained, making it accessible for everything from trail running to a casual Sunday stroll.

Birdwatching and observation

The highlights of the valley are the wooden bird towers situated along the lake edges. Even for non-experts, these vantage points offer a unique perspective on the scale of the wetlands. On any given day, you can spot swans, lapwings, and various species of ducks.

The northern part of the valley feels more manicured and park-like, while the southern section opens up into a wilder, more expansive landscape that makes it easy to forget how close you are to the city.

Practical notes

  • Parking: Available at the main entrance on Over Kæret or at the southern entrance near Landlystvej.
  • Transport: Easily reachable by bike from the city center (approx. 10 mins) or via local bus lines.
  • Conditions: The gravel paths remain stable year-round, though the low-lying meadows can become soggy after heavy rain.

A high-reward escape for anyone in the Aalborg area looking for fresh air and quiet surroundings without the need for a long drive.
